History Detroit
You have landed on the recently (I hope!) redesigned home page of historydetroit.com. I write "I hope" because over 12 years passed without an update to this page and there is nothing to guarantee that there won't be a repeat performance of such neglect.
I created this website in 1999 when I first moved to Detroit. For nearly 7 years, I lived within walking distance of the Main Branch of the Detroit Public Library, home of the amazing Burton Historical Collection. If you live nearby and haven't visited, do it -- right now!
As stated on the original home page, Detroit, Michigan is an amazing, misjudged city with a wonderfully rich history. Being a website and database developer (and nothing whatsoever like an historian or expert on Detroit), it was only natural that I would share some of my findings on the web. Since I, like most of you, have to make some money to get by in this world, I never labored under the illusion that I could make a complete site on Detroit history (not even the first 300 years of it as originally planned) alone or in a timely manner. It was always my hope that others would submit articles/stories/anecdotes for posting. Over the years, many have expressed an interest in this, but few have actually followed through (many stop contacting me when I tell them that I won't write the story for them -- sorry, it's just that, in case you haven't noticed yet, I'm just not a writer).
On that note, perhaps I should stop this inane cyber-babble and let you explore the site (if you really want to know more about me or the project, vist About This Site). Might I suggest that you start at the very beginning? I've heard that it is the very best place to start.
